'Would you be willing to pray'?

- Editors' Table

One of the awesome features of JSH-Online.com is the ability to search and explore over a century of articles and testimonies published in The Christian Science Journal, Sentinel, and Herald. Though writing styles may have changed and design has evolved over the years, the healing mission of these publications has remained the same. The prayerful approach to writing for the periodicals is just as important as it was 27 years ago when this note from the editors was published in the April 8, 1985, Sentinel under the title, “About Writing for the Christian Science Periodicals.”

“Recently we asked one of our contributors what she felt might encourage people to write for the periodicals. She thought for a moment and then said just two words—‘need’ and ‘prayer.’ If church members realized the far-reaching healing effect of the articles, she said, they might be more alert to supporting the work with their own manuscripts. From her own public practice of Christian Science she is aware of how much the magazines mean to people, and that’s one reason she writes.

“Then she said perhaps the editors might take a little different approach. Instead of asking people to write, we might ask that each member pray about the mission of our magazines, and listen for God’s direction, and let any writing come as the result of that prayer.
