"UNDER GRACE"

From the August 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the first chapter of St. John's Gospel it is written, "The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ." Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in her writings and in her life and demonstrations showed forth the tenderness and loving tolerance found in that "grace and truth" which "came by Jesus Christ." Thus our Leader humbly acknowledged the illumination that came through Christ Jesus and his sublime, exemplary life.

These two great teachers of spiritual truth, while rendering "unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's," did not forget or neglect to render to God the things that are God's. Throughout the ages, the life and happiness of mankind apparently have been influenced and controlled by many false laws, man-made decrees founded upon material beliefs, void of spirituality. To destroy such laws and to reveal the demonstrable nature of the law of God, good, is the mission of Christian Science.

It is very evident to all seekers for Truth that mankind has been bound by the so-called laws of matter and heredity. And because of such false influences and theological misconceptions, these so-called laws have been and are today claiming to govern the lives of men and to impede progress. Yet Paul says in his epistle to the Romans, "Ye are not under the law, but under grace."
