INDIVIDUALIZING INFINITE POWER

From the February 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

According to Christian Science reality is defined by the nature of God. The Supreme Being, therefore, is not merely to be known about, as though He were far removed from man. His infinite presence is to be realized, His irresistible power to be felt. His all-knowing intelligence to be relied upon. Since He is infinite Mind, the Principle of creation, He unfolds His qualities to the individual spiritual consciousness or man.

To humanity, reality must come as revelation. Christian Science is not merely a theory about Deity, but is God's revelation of His own nature. Christian Science is the Comforter which Jesus said the Father would send. Derivatively, the verb "comfort" means "to strengthen much." Christian Science reveals the operation, the enforcement, of that which is divinely, everlastingly true, even the spiritual nature of existence as constituting all true thought and action. It is God's revelation of living reality.

"I do nothing of myself," said Jesus, "but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things." The Master's consciousness reflected the divine Mind, and his works evidenced his Christianly scientific or spiritual knowing. Jesus' position differed from that of other men because the basis of his thinking was different. His thoughts, proceeding from divine Mind, God, the All-in-all, expressed the willingness, inspiration, and enlightenment which disclose God's ever-presence. With others, dispositional human traits, as well as generally accepted material theories, were allowed to obscure, to human sense, the natural goodness of man as the likeness of infinite good. Moreover, Jesus' position differed from that of others in that his religious sense was vital, whereas the world's was ceremonial or doctrinal. This fundamental difference persists today, and calls attention to our need to make practical our understanding of Immanuel, "God with us." To follow Jesus' example, we must know that he individualized infinite power because he acknowledged, heeded, and desired no other power than that which comes from God.
