"ANOTHER COMFORTER"

From the April 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In this time of world turbulence Christians, generally, are turning with renewed interest to the study of the words and works of Christ Jesus. The search is inspired by the hope and expectancy that in the stress of events so rapidly unfolding there may be gained some new light, some new remedy for the ills of humanity.

One of the sayings of the Master which well merits careful and prayerful examination is recorded in the fourteenth chapter of John's Gospel. When addressing his beloved disciples, telling them of things to come, he assured them that if they truly loved him and would keep his commandments he would pray the Father and He would give them another Comforter, one that would abide with them forever. He defined this Comforter as the "Spirit of truth," and further assured them that this Comforter should teach them "all things." Here are set forth promises that have the deepest significance for all humanity. For herein lie the means of salvation, of freedom from all that restricts, burdens, and limits human experience.

Recognizing the deep significance of Jesus' words, Mary Baker Eddy characterizes this Comforter, describing it in unmistakable terms. On page 55 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes: "In the words of St. John: 'He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.' This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science." And again on page 332 of the textbook she says, "Jesus demonstrated Christ; he proved that Christ is the divine idea of God—the Holy Ghost, or Comforter, revealing the divine Principle, Love, and leading into all truth." It follows, then, that in receiving the Comforter in its fullness we shall gain understanding of all reality, of all truth.
