"THE IRREPRESSIBLE CONFLICT"

From the August 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the midst of persecution John, the Revelator, saw "the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven." This new Jerusalem is defined in part on page 592 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy as, "Divine Science; the spiritual facts and harmony of the universe." Everyone who has been healed in Christian Science has seen something of these spiritual facts, and the student of Christian Science knows that they are always available to destroy discord and to reveal harmony. He knows also that these facts constitute the truth and substance of all things, and that they are his through his reflection of Mind or Soul. They exist within his own being or real consciousness and constitute the kingdom of God, which Jesus said is "within you."

When one has glimpsed this kingdom within, he realizes that in reality his individual being is complete, and that he does not have to get or change things from without in order to attain satisfaction, peace, and freedom. Instead, his only desire is to recognize real substance, which already is his, and to prove in his own experience that the spiritual facts of the universe are always present and powerful, no matter what the testimony of material sense may be.

In real being there is of course no material sense, but in human experience material sense claims to have the power to prevent mortal man from yielding up an erroneous sense of things and from accepting the facts of Spirit. Consequently, one who has found these spiritual facts and endeavors to maintain them seems to be confronted with a conflict between the facts of Spirit and the arguments of material sense. On page 102 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy says, "Science has inaugurated the irrepressible conflict between sense and Soul."
