"IN THE REGENERATION"

From the May 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Ye must be born again," the Master said.
And there, on that dark roof top in the East,
The wondering Nicodemus heard and mused:
How. can a man be born when he is old?
I could not change my present sober age
For infancy. One cannot younger grow.
Why does this man teach that which cannot be?

But Jesus saw his wonderment, and gently said:
The flesh and Spirit never mingle; that is true.
It is not strange ye cannot comprehend
The things of Spirit with your finite sense.
When ye have lifted up the Son of God,
Then shall ye know the things I teach are true.

And since that night beneath the Eastern stars
Full many a man has pondered in his heart
And wondered how he could again be born.
Today, with carnage-saddened hearts, men's eyes
Towards the future doubtingly are turned.
Can mankind be regenerate? they ask.
Can yet a new and higher world be formed?
Can mortals leave behind the embittered strife,
And on a new foundation build again
A world of hope, and peace, and fearless joy?
