THE SCIENCE OF LOVING ONE'S NEIGHBOR

From the January 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Only by understanding Mind and its idea can the truth about anything be known. The understanding that God is Mind leads to the revelation of Him as Love, because real intelligence is always loving. Beholding God's true nature, we love Him. And. knowing Him to be the only creator, we love our neighbor, for we see him as in truth he is—our brother in Mind.

Christian Science teaches that since all is Mind, all experience must be mental, and that man, the reflection of infinite Mind, expresses only the activity of divine consciousness. It was Jesus' understanding of this spiritual fact that enabled him to demonstrate the omnipresence of Mind, of Love, "in earth, as it is in heaven." Jesus was a Scientist, not a sciolist. His thinking was exact. He knew man as one with God, with Mind, Truth, and Love. He recognized his own true identity and that of his neighbor as the very expression of God's being.

Mary Baker Eddy, in her definition of "Elias," refers to the Science of Christ, the Science that Jesus so perfectly demonstrated, in these words: "Christian Science, with which can be discerned the spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 585). Discernment of "the spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold" is necessary to the practice of the Science which demands that one love his neighbor.
