RIGHT WHERE . . . RIGHT THERE

From the March 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Jesus of Nazareth began his healing ministry "preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand" (Mark 1:14, 15). The Master perceived that the kingdom of God is ever untouched by the claims of mortality. His solid conviction of Spirit's supremacy and of the illusive nature of all material phenomena empowered him to subjugate every claim of mortality with the immortal facts of spiritual existence. Right where material sense suggested sin, disease, or discord, right there the Saviour discerned sinless and harmonious being. This correct view of creation healed the sick and the sinning.

On page 123 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "Divine Science, rising above physical theories, excludes matter, resolves things into thoughts, and replaces the objects of material sense with spiritual ideas." To become an efficient resolver of things into thoughts, the conscientious Christian Scientist prayerfully cultivates spiritual sense. He searches the Scriptures and Mrs. Eddy's writings for more light on this subject of resolving that he may apprehend the nature of spiritual reality and thus be able to differentiate between material sense testimony and divine evidence. Through spiritual discernment he perceives that right where error appears, right there in reality are the ideas of Soul.

In the teachings of Christian Science one learns that disease and all phases of discord arise from fear or misconceptions and that freedom is attained through transformation of thought and character. Every claim of evil counterfeits a spiritual fact; and divine metaphysics replaces each wrong concept with its spiritual counterfact, which is ever at hand. For instance, right where suffering sense argues for discomfort, right there spiritual sense declares for the consciousness of painless and harmonious being. Right where personal sense claims weariness, right there spiritual sense testifies to the energizing qualities of Spirit. Where material sense suggests insufficiency, there spiritual sense bears witness to Love's ever-present supply of infinite good. The intelligent application of specific counter-facts to the human need acts as a law of restoration to a normal state of well-being.
