WHAT IS TRUE LIVING?

From the September 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

From time to time we may listen to the suggestion that we are missing something if we do not seek satisfaction in some particular form of sense gratification. The suggestion that such gratification will give one a taste of heaven on earth is, of course, false.

We all desire happiness and harmony, but according to the teachings of Christian Science, these blessings are the direct result of living close to the precepts of the master Christian, Christ Jesus. Through the study of this Science, one learns to know what is true of God, Christ, law, man, and the universe; and putting this knowledge into practice is true living.

The Bible records many beautiful examples of the kind of existence which expresses lasting joy, peace, strength, and harmony. Ezekiel, in endeavoring to show the people how to live, summarized God's instructions thus: "Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye" (18:31, 32). The prophet knew one must turn from wrong thinking and acting to good in order truly to live.
