From Ignorance to Understanding

From the September 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Abraham, in Bible terms, was a spiritual explorer. When he headed his caravan out of moon-worshiping Haran toward the unknown homeland God had promised, there began a journey of great significance to every one of us. It was a search, as the writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews puts it, "for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God," Heb. 11:10; and it had much to do with breaking the bonds that ignorance of God had placed on humanity. Down the Bible-recorded centuries one can see the gradual progress of this search and the dawning of spiritual understanding, until we come to that great blaze of spiritual light Christ Jesus' advent brought to humanity.

As we overcome material mortal thinking, with its limitations, doubts, and uncertainties—as we begin to reach out toward and understand the spiritual realm —we are sharing in that same journey.

When one comes to think of it, ultimately there's no point in placing one's confidence in life as material. Search as one may, the key either to present or everlasting life will not be found in materiality. Where else can one turn but to spiritual life? It needs courage to launch out and demonstrate spiritual Truth, but why hesitate? Why not explore that realm of the spiritual, which Jesus demonstrated so successfully? We need to cultivate and use our spiritual sense. Mrs. Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God."Science and Health, p. 209;
