Have You Prayed Today for Your Government?

From the September 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Prayer for one's country and government can be highly effective. Through it we can become more conscious of God's government and learn, systematically, more of God as Principle and of Principle's ways. We can discover how a nation—through its individual citizens—can turn to the one Mind, God. Such prayer means loving, in the highest sense, our government and those in it.

Throughout human history there has always been a need to improve government. The wrong that sometimes characterizes it is explained in Christian Science as part of the general false belief of life in matter. This basic error needs to be corrected and its opposite proved true: that life is spiritual and that God's government is the only reality of being.

Instead of our becoming outraged at governmental inadequacies, we need wisely to help provide the kind of calm atmosphere in which wrongs can be overcome. While we certainly should not tolerate evil in government, we can deal with it in a scientific manner—the same as we can treat the claim of bodily disease. To see the nothingness of evil, we must refuse to make a personal reality of wrongdoing. With spiritual love and deep compassion, we need to consider and proclaim the fact that all individuals in government are, in reality, perfect expressions of God.
