Supporting a Righteous Government

From the December 1975 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes, in looking at the human scene in government today, we are tempted to ask: How can I find a righteous government to support? Is it practical to base my decisions on love for God and man when I seem to see so much discord and confusion? When asked concerning her politics, Mrs. Eddy replied: "I have none, in reality, other than to help support a righteous government; to love God supremely, and my neighbor as myself." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 276;

In Christian Science we learn that if we wish to love God supremely we need to begin by accepting His role as divine Principle, the only governing power operating in the universe. Because He is Spirit, He is ever present; and because He is Life, His is the only activity going on anywhere. Does this mean that we have to assume that what appears to be a faulty human government is really spiritual? No, but we can and must spiritualize our own concept of government and know that the wholly spiritual concept, God's government of all, is the fact right now. This truth, realized, will meet the human need for better government.

Biblical authority for spiritually based government is given in Isaiah, where we read, "The Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; he will save us." Isa. 33:22; In several countries constitutional or parliamentary democracy is built upon three separate but related functions, the judicial, the legislative, and the executive branches of government. How comforting to know that God is the spiritual basis of each one! As we learn this we will help to prove increasingly that the relationships of these functions cannot be disrupted by conflicting influences such as pride, self -justification, egotism, false ambition.
