Completely loved

From the January 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid," Matt. 14:27. Christ Jesus said. We need humility to hear the gentle and powerful benediction of the Christ inherent in this message. It is indispensable to us every moment.

Throughout her writings Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, underscores the fatherhood and motherhood of God. When we face a problem, we can rely on the presence our Leader describes in this definition: "FATHER. Eternal Life; the one Mind; the divine Principle, commonly called God." Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 586. But in addition, we need also to understand a further fact as she presents it: "God is our Father and our Mother, our Minister and the great Physician: He is man's only real relative on earth and in heaven." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 151. In any situation, therefore, a sense of God's mothering as well as fathering presence brings with it a profound feeling of God's care, forgiveness, and mercy. This assurance dispels anxiety.

The fact is, man is spiritual, not material; whole, not sick. This means that we can be victorious, not embattled. Divine Love—our Mother, Father, Physician, and Minister—is supplying us with all good. "Applied to Deity, Father and Mother are synonymous terms; they signify one God," Message to The Mother Church for 1900, p. 5. Mrs. Eddy states.
