Reaching out to Truth: the role of study

From the August 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To gain a firmer grasp on Christ, Truth, is something we all want. How we go about doing this is very individual, but many have found that regular, systematic study of the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy is wonderfully fruitful. Sometimes though, such study is given either too much or too little importance. It absorbs some students to the exclusion of much else, while it may discourage others who feel inadequate or are puzzled about how to use Concordances and other study aids.

Maybe now's a good time to step back and take another look at this particular aspect of study. Why do Christian Scientists study the sacred truths in these books, anyway? What can we expect to gain? How does this study relate to individual spiritual growth?

Not long ago I was asking myself some of these questions. I'd been getting more and more enthusiastic about Bible study, and better acquainted with the many tools we have, such as Bible concordances, commentaries, and various translations. These resources, together with the numerous Scriptural texts examined in Mrs. Eddy's writings, were turning Bible study into a real adventure.
