Poems

... or, you eat what you are

From the October 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Well then . . .
the apple of mortality
I really couldn't eat,
though, serpent-thought, you do suggest
that it is very sweet.
But no. Though it is shining red,
its other side is bruised.
That apple of mortality?
Emphatically refused!

Its promises don't satisfy
the longing that I feel,
but Spirit fills my plate up high
with nourishment more real:
with peace and joy and confidence,
with feelings of real worth,
with thoughts of man
as Love's own child—
beyond all death or birth.

I may be hungry later on?
No possibility!
I know I'm precious to my God,
and that's what's feeding me.
