The sanctuary of obedience

From the July 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A sanctuary is a place of refuge, where we're safe and have what we need. The Bible speaks of a spiritual haven available to all of us right where we are: "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust."  Ps. 91:2.

We can always turn to God as our refuge, whatever the human need may be. God is neither a corporeal being nor a cold, unfeeling force. He is divine Love—our Father-Mother. Divine Love is infinite, All, embracing each of us. Love never leaves its children to fend for themselves; never causes or allows them to fail. Love is unchanging Principle, which establishes and governs our being, maintaining our completeness, harmony, and safety. Man is Love's spiritual idea, or object, tenderly held in Love's omnipotence.

God is an unfailing refuge, because in His allness there is nothing to oppose Him. In infinite Love, there is nothing unlike Love, nothing to cause harm. In infinite Spirit there is no lack, because Spirit is the only substance and is never depleted. Neither is there any disease, because the substance of Spirit is harmonious, pure, and indestructible, and man reflects the perfect substance of Spirit.
