Preparing for the next century

From the November 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One young woman commented that she wanted to be an astrophysicist. She was aiming for a career that would not just keep up with these fast-paced times, but would be a step ahead of them. A gentleman beyond usual retirement years spoke vigorously about getting into the world of computers. When he learned that grade-schoolers knew more than he did, he said it was time for him to jump in and discover what was happening in this global communications explosion.

Lots of people are thinking ahead to the twenty-first century. Many of them are reflecting on how best to prepare themselves. Whether nudged by fear or foresight, they're wondering how to be ready for a world that's changing so drastically.

Of course, the world has always been changing. That's not new. But the rate of change is so dramatic that it's understandable why many are peering ahead, looking for ways to fit in, looking for security, maybe even trying to subdue an uncertainty about what the future holds.
