The dictionary tells us that a pilgrimage is a journey, especially one to a shrine or sacred place as an act of devotion. It might, however, be any long journey, as to a place of historical interest or for a particular purpose. But couldn't we think of pilgrimage in another sense as a mental journey? We might see it as a progression of thought from a material, mistaken view of existence to a spiritual view—to an understanding of God, Spirit, and of man in His image.
A number of hymns use the term pilgrim in a way that brings to mind an earnest seeker for truth. For instance,
Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land:
I am Thine, and Thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy powerful hand. Christian Science Hymnal, No. 90 .
