HEALING PAINFUL MEMORIES

Living in the past, future, or now?

Safe in God's presence, we don't have to be afraid of the future or replay the past.

From the October 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Do you worry about what's ahead? Have you ever wished you could go back to the past and change events, conversations, even beliefs you once held?

When we look back and entertain unhappy memories or anticipate events and conversations that we believe are inevitable in the future, we are actually taking the present vital moment to "live" somewhere else. Focusing on either the past or the future can mean trapping ourselves on a mental treadmill where we don't progress.

The Bible, however, says that we are made in the image and likeness of God. This is our true identity. And because God is eternal, we are actually eternal, with no material past or future. As the individual, spiritual reflection of God, we coexist with our creator and eternally express His/Her infinite perfection. This understanding can correct what we believe are mistakes and painful events of the past and alleviate fears for the future.
