Our God-supported purpose

From the October 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A friend of mine was very upset about a job she had taken on. She was helping someone else through a difficult time, and the very one she was helping was meting out verbal lashings to her. I was very disturbed, hearing these accounts day after day, along with her threats to abandon her job.

One night I was praying for peace. It came to me that my friend was on a godly mission. Regardless of what seemed to be going on to stop her, she could go right on, knowing she was fully supported by God. Jesus says, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matt. 5:16. When we're doing this, we're safe.

I said nothing to my friend about my prayers. I offered only a gentle smoothing of the ruffled feathers, so to speak. But now, two years later, she still holds her job and is more satisfied with herself and her accomplishments.
