GROWING SPIRITUALLY

Problems aren't a sign of failure

God's purpose for us is always good.

From the October 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I graduated from college, I was required to serve in the United States military during the war in Vietnam. At that time I could see no reason for my having to go into this conflict and convinced myself that there must be a place for me to fulfill my military obligation where I would not be put into a combat situation.

Only two months prior to my receiving orders for my tour of duty, I took a course of instruction in Christian Science. During this time I spent many hours in prayer and study. I became sure that violence was completely foreign to my nature as God's spiritual expression. I saw that my objective each day was to learn how to be obedient to the highest sense of right I could possibly understand—to the sense of right God was revealing to me every moment.

Violence is completely foreign to my nature as God's child.
