DEEP THINK

SPIRITUAL SUBSTANCE

Matter. Spirit. Which is true substance? Are both? How we answer these questions can impact the way we live our life —and show us how to triumph over adversity.

From the July 2006 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I WAS BENDING DOWN TO GET A BOOK from the lower shelf of my desk, when the flap, which I had probably neglected to close appropriately, suddenly came down hard on my nose. Amid extreme pain, all kinds of thoughts raced through my head: My nose is going to look awful! Will there be swelling and discoloration? Have I broken my nose?

But I stopped myself quickly. I knew, through years of experience practicing Christian Science healing, that none of those predictions had to come true. I had learned that I reflect the spiritual substance of the Divine. As the reflection of God, or Spirit, I knew that my true substance had to be completely spiritual, regardless of the impressively threatening scene that had just happened.

I WAS DETERMINED that the only thoughts I would let into my consciousness would be of my spiritual substance.
