THE CROSS AND THE CROWN

From the January 2007 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"If you launch your bark upon the ever-agitated but healthful waters of truth, you will encounter storms. Your good will be evil spoken of. This is the cross. Take it up and bear it, for through it you win and wear the crown."

—MARY BAKER EDDY

THE CROSS. THE CROWN. And Christ Jesus' unforgettable words to his 12 disciples as he sent them out to preach the gospel to the "lost sheep" of his nation: "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons" (Matt. 10:8 ASV). These symbols and words resonate profoundly with all Christians. Nearly 125 years ago, Mary Baker Eddy felt impelled to unite these elements uniquely in the Cross and Crown seal she chose to be on the cover of all her published works. And today people around the world are increasingly recognizing this Cross and Crown seal as the central emblem of Christian Science.
