YOUR INSIGHTS

YOUR INSIGHTS

From the January 2010 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Journal receives a number of contributions that, because of space constraints, we can't publish in full. In these pages, however, we can offer excerpts that we found inspiring and insightful—some spiritual "nuggets" worth tucking into thought.

When I was little, my parents listened intently to a Christian Science radio program called "The Bible Speaks to You" on our way to church Sunday mornings. (My brothers and I didn't make a peep.) I remember how happy those people sounded who told how they had overcome really bad stuff in their lives after letting the Bible speak to them.

As an adult, I encountered some of that bad stuff, too. So I began turning to my Bible to let it speak to me. At first, I didn't think it really spoke to me because it didn't say what I wanted to hear. But soon I realized that the messages that came were really the ones I needed. For instance, one night depressed and sick for days, scared, and feeling all alone, I blurted out, "How long?" Then I wondered if that question appeared in the Bible. It did!—lots of times (and in response to several complaints similar to mine). But the one that spoke to me the most clearly was this question right back to me, "How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard?" (Prov. 6:9).
