IN SYNC WITH GOD

From the October 2010 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WE SYNCHRONIZE OUR WATCHES, synchronize our iPods to our computers, and synchronize our DVRs to record TV shows. Yet, beyond the use of these gadgets, is a deeper spiritual concept of synchronicity that is of even greater value to humanity. Synchronicity is an attribute of God, divine Principle. I see it as harmonization, or the precise orchestration of God's ideas. In Genesis 1 the Bible says man is made in God's image. Because we reflect God, this means that each of us must also express and include flawless synchronicity—or the spiritual state of being where harmony rules and all of God's ideas fit and work together in perfect consonance.

While this sounds a bit abstract, this simple truth about man's nature can be applied to daily life through prayer. The prayer that strives to bring thought into alignment with God results in the operation of divine Principle as the law of synchronicity for every intricate daily detail. This law is present and available for each of us. I've found that events that seem to be governed by chance are uplifted and ordered when I submit them to the government of God, Principle. In the Bible, Elijah was able to predict exactly where the Israelites' enemy armies would be located at a specific time. This was so frustrating to Israel's enemies that their leader asked, "Which of us is for the king of Israel?" (II Kings 6:11). In the same way, we can know precisely what we need to know, when we need to know it, and be right where we need to be at the instant requisite for good in our experience.

When we gain glimpses of the ever-present reality of divine order, human events lose some pull toward chaos, and yield to Truth, God. In Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy refers to this human and divine coincidence as "divinity embracing humanity" (p. 561). This embrace results in the healing of any seeming lack of synchronization or inharmony in our lives. Armed with this knowledge, we can demonstrate that we need not miss any opportunity for the right relationship to develop or career move to take place. Because God is in control of every moment, prayer that affirms His presence can prevent taking the wrong fork in the road, or direct a course correction. The spiritual fact is, we already exist right now at our exact point of perfect fulfillment, satisfaction, and abundance.
