Church Membership: Now, That's Something Worth Celebrating

From the September 2010 issue of The Christian Science Journal

LIFE IS FULL OF NOTABLE EVENTS: A friend's silver wedding anniversary, a grandson's high-school graduation, and, for some, even a long-awaited spring is worth celebrating.

Recently, I have been reflecting on a notable event of my own. Although this ten-year anniversary came and went quietly, it has held significance for me by reminding me of a commitment I made to help others, and myself, on a journey to spiritual awakening—the journey to know God better. So what was this event? It was when I became a member of my local branch church.

A friend once told me that some of my greatest spiritual growth would come from church membership. This has proven true for me. Just as some of our biggest challenges, and the overcoming of them, can happen right in our own families, so, too, can these remarkable struggles and triumphs occur from being part of a church family.
