20-Something

A holy purpose—for everyone

Some people are very clear where they are going and what they want to do after their college studies, whereas others are confused. Those who thought they knew their purpose in life and did not find it may feel unsatisfied and confused or hopeless about their future. So what to do?

After finishing high school, I wanted to complete my bachelor’s degree in fashion design. More than a desire, it was a self-proving act. I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer, though my parents were not happy with my decision, because at that time there wasn’t enough opportunity in this field in my region of India. In my last year before graduation, I was completely lost. I was surrounding myself with a few friends who were not serious in their studies, and I was impressed with their living style. Because of this, I even lost interest in taking my final exams.

Before my exams, I had three months of free time and I started working in a call center, but this ended with a bad experience with my team leader. During these years, I was judgmental, afraid of people, and felt dissatisfaction in my job due to lack of appreciation and direction. At the same time, a friend introduced me to Christian Science and took me to a Christian Science Society in Chandigarh, where I met a Christian Science practitioner. I started taking help from her for my problems. In the beginning I was not very frank with her, but during one of our conversations I casually told her that I didn’t want to take my final exams. She explained to me that we should improve the talents that God gave us. I agreed and took my final exams—and to my surprise, I completed my graduation with good marks.
