The expansive educational system of Christian Science

From the July 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have you ever heard someone question why Christian Science doesn’t have adult Sunday School? Perhaps you have done so yourself? The query really speaks of a heart’s desire to learn more about this Science. But just because one is older than 20 doesn’t mean they have missed out. Mary Baker Eddy established a very broad and all-encompassing educational system within Christian Science that includes and blesses everyone. It only needs to be recognized and taken advantage of!

I first recognized this when I graduated from Sunday School. Joining the branch church closest to my university, I was immediately asked to teach a Sunday School class myself. The class consisted of many active five-year-olds, including triplets that looked identical and initially spent more time under the table playing than listening to me. The prayers and listening that were required of me were a completely new kind of spiritual education that I valued greatly.

And so I began to realize that every aspect of church that Mrs. Eddy outlined in the Church Manual is a dynamic element in our education and demonstration of this Science of Being. Speaking of the embrace of the Church Manual on the lives of students, she offered this assessment: “It stands alone, uniquely adapted to form the budding thought and hedge it about with divine Love” (Church Manual, p. 104). Clearly, she was satisfied that every necessary educational, nurturing element can be found in the provisions provided by this guide for living and growing.
