From the July 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This month is the second in which we’re discussing each of the six religious tenets of Christian Science, which Mary Baker Eddy set down as the conclusion to the chapter “Recapitulation” in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (see pp. 496–497). We’re counting them down, so to speak—in reverse order, concluding in November with the first tenet, which relates to the celebration of the King James Bible’s 400th anniversary.

Tenet number five, on the cover of this issue, presents the importance of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. And looking over the various articles and testimonies of healing, I couldn’t help but see that each one in its own way marks a unique fulfillment of this proclamation, that a Christian Scientist’s faith is grounded in all that Jesus accomplished for the world in the final three days of his earthly ministry.

Whether someone is actually confronting a fatal accident, as John Tyler did (in “Ours to Prove—the Understanding of Eternal Life” on page 27), or struggling “to think true thoughts,” as was the case for Wanda Richard (in “Free to Think” on page 38), that ultimate example of the Master Christian really does have direct relevance—the illusion of mortality is fading and the reality of eternal Life is coming to light.
