Church Alive

No Doubt About It, Church Is Alive!

. . . at least, judging from the numerous inspiring letters and articles the Journal receives every day from individuals all over the world. For example, Puneet Sharma, of India, whose Christian Science Society held one of the many Church Alive Summits inspired by the theme of this year’s Annual Meeting of The Mother Church.

Turn the page, and you’ll find thought-provoking excerpts from a session at the recentBoston Summit called “Services that Heal: Inspired Reading and Listening,” given by the Readers of The Mother Church.

Following that are articles—Church in Action—from Puneet and others who are truly witnesses to a revitalized, and yes—alive Church.

Church in Action

‘We decided to boldly introduce Christian Science’

From the September 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When Christian Science is introduced to people in my country, it is usually not accepted at first because they seem to have a fear of the word Christian and of conversion. Perhaps the fear is because of past experiences in India with Mughal emperors who converted Hindus to Muslims, and later with Christian missionaries who converted Hindus to Christians. We Christian Scientists need to be patient in how we deal with these fears. It is not so easy to convince people that Christian Science is not about conversion; it is about healing.

When people find out I’m a Christian Scientist, they generally ask me, “Have you become Christian?” They see Christian Science as a foreign religion that does not belong to them.

I came to know about Christian Science when a friend gave me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. This friend told me about a healing she’d had and a new sense of purpose she’d gained by following Christian Science. She did this because she knew I was not very clear about my own purpose in life. That week I attended a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, and four years later I can affirm that Christian Science has transformed my life for the better.
