The beauty of a prayerful treatment

An in-depth look at Christian Science prayer

From the January 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I remember one of the first times I had to speak publicly about Christian Science. I spoke before a group of medical nurses at a Chicago hospital. They asked many questions—deep and probing questions about how prayer could be reliable and how it could actually heal. Finally, one nurse asked, “Could you give us an example of how you pray? Would you pray for us?”

I had never been asked a question like that before. I took a big breath. I looked down at the floor to focus (although I suppose it looked like I was bowing my head in prayer). And then I began to pray out loud.

I turned wholeheartedly to God in prayer. I was praying as I would for anyone who asked for my help as a Christian Science practitioner. I spoke to them of the certainty of God’s love, His all-knowing care, and of their intact and close relationship to divine Love, God. I added that no matter how serious a problem looked, it didn’t change the fact of God’s love and the patient’s loveliness to Him. I concluded by emphasizing how God’s love is entirely unconditional. Since He is all wisdom and made all of us to reflect Him as His children, we all perfectly reflect that Love, wisdom, and Life right now.
