The Church Manual speaks to every listening heart

From the December 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

An understanding and appreciation of the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy is vital to the progress of every sincere Christian Scientist—but perhaps from a different perspective than may at first be obvious. When we read and study the Church Manual, we certainly become aware of the functioning of the Church body. However, the might of this slim yet meaty volume can be seen in the standard it sets for our own thinking, speaking, and conduct.

Reading and practicing what we find in these directives is such an expansive activity and keeps us wide awake to what is needed in our lives. I greatly value Mrs. Eddy’s comment on the vital purpose of this important work: “This church is impartial. Its rules apply not to one member only, but to one and all equally. Of this I am sure, that each Rule and By-law in this Manual will increase the spirituality of him who obeys it, invigorate his capacity to heal the sick, to comfort such as mourn, and to awaken the sinner” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 230).

The concept of rules is so often misunderstood. In many instances people bristle at the mention of the word because it implies have-to’s, must-do’s, someone telling them what to do. However, the provisions found in the Manual really present a life standard that is filled with promise and ever-increasing spiritual development for the one who gives them consideration in daily life.
