Prayer on the road

From the July 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Once, a fellow church member asked me which radio station I listened to while driving to work. I replied that I prayed during my short morning commute, and celebrated the events of the day by listening to my favorite music station on the drive home. The activity of praying while driving has taught me many lessons, and has made all the difference in many of my days. I have been a witness to many instances of God’s perfect infinite care for all of us.

For many years I drove to work in the early morning hours, praising God for the beauty of His glorious sunrises, for His exquisite morning stars in a dark blue sky, or for the song of His birds, welcoming a new day. I also prayed to witness a joy-filled harmonious day for everyone at the school where I was headed.

In later years, when I had a longer commute, I prayed for every car on the road, knowing that because God places each one of His ideas in its perfect place at all times, there could literally be no accidents. I knew that the divine intelligence of Mind placed every driver on the road, just as He set in place every grain of sand in the earth. During these prayers, I practiced listening to God more than listening to my own personal thoughts.
