One healing brings another

From the December 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What started out as a sweet evening roasting marshmallows with three of my grandchildren ended in a healing that deepened my relationship with God and opened my thought to a clearer understanding of my instant access to God’s healing power.

Stoking the fire, we were excited to christen our new fire pit by first filling it with paper and small sticks from fallen branches and then lighting the paper. As the fire consumed the paper and sticks, I carefully placed the mesh cover over the roaring flames. After watching them slowly die down to a manageable level, I reached to lift the mesh cover off the fire pit. An angel message clearly whispered, “Stop! It’s hot!” But human will took over, and I argued that the company that made the fire pit would not have built it with a handle that would heat up when used.

Much to my surprise, it was so hot that my fingers stuck to the handle. As I pulled them off, I was in excruciating pain. Three fingers were badly charred, with blisters already forming. The pain paralyzed my arm, which then hung loosely by my side. The children were collecting long sticks to hold their marshmallows, so they didn’t see the fear on my face. I realized that the next two weeks were critical to typing on my computer—finishing the thesis required for completion of my master’s degree in Bible studies. I immediately jumped to the conclusion that my fingers could not heal in time.
