Of Good Report

Monday of Magnitude

(My report as an Institutional Committee Volunteer)

From the February 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Dashing off in the rain, car full, traffic heavy,
I sigh behind the wheel, calming thought
I consider how much there is to do …
The thought creeps in, “Turn back home?”
But Love has a gift for me today—
and who am I to say, “No, thanks”?
So as the car begins to accelerate toward jail,
my thought begins to accelerate toward joy.
“Father-Mother, show me Your man,
       starting right here.”
I see my innocence—
those tempting thoughts of disobedience, selfishness, have no claim.
Inspired and grateful for Principle’s grace,
I walk into the medium security institution.
The hustle of busyness, tinged with anxiety,
       mortal mind’s red tape.
After signing in (a renewed covenant)
and passing through what can only be considered the gates of heaven,
we arrive in the chapel.

The call goes out.
Men begin to arrive.
Some skeptics, some first-timers, some old friends.
       Recognition: I know you!
 The service begins.
The men lift their voices in song, the victory song,
not always on key, but always a joyful and beautiful noise.
As our pastor speaks, hearts respond, voices call out in agreement,
       “Amen.” “Yes.” “Amen.” “Alleluia.”
       This is Church.
We are lifted up, each one of us.
Upon closing, the men will not leave without thanks, prayers, sometimes tears.
And more than one turns back to say,
       “I’m glad I’m here.”
       “I’m healed.”
“I know why it’s called Science now.”
I think, “Me, too” as I walk out throughly cleansed.
My drive home is a countdown to my next visit,
a humbling gratitude feast and a prayer that all may have
       a Monday of this Magnitude
       every day.
