Micro-publishing for Africa

From the February 2014 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Over the past three years, The Christian Science Publishing Society (CSPS) has worked to partner with established Christian Science branch churches and societies in a few sub-Saharan African countries on a project to increase access to and engagement with the Christian Science periodicals.

This spirit of partnership has overcome challenges of availability and timely delivery of the periodicals in these African Fields. Various publishing challenges that were difficult to sort out from Boston were naturally resolved when church members, representing the churches and societies from these countries, came together with the managing publisher of the CSPS on African soil in April 2011 and again in November 2013.

This partnering activity with the African Fields began in 2011 on a project called the “DDD” program (“Downloading, Duplication, and Distribution” of Christian Science periodicals). Together we designed a “micro-publishing model” to deliver the periodicals via the Internet. These DDD editions are then printed by each church, using local resources, and distributed locally. Members now receive the periodicals almost immediately after they are published.
