Q: As I continue to nourish my understanding of Christian Science, I love the idea that we don’t experience God in an anthropomorphic sense—as an entity exhibiting human qualities—but as infinite, all-encompassing Spirit. With that in mind, can you help me better understand the phrase “God has a plan for you” in a more spiritually expansive way?
A: The Bible has many examples that may suggest an anthropomorphic God. And Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer of Christian Science, could write of God as our helper and then say: “He pities us. He has mercy upon us, and guides every event of our careers” (Unity of Good, pp. 3–4). She then leads thought upward to a God holding all creation in perfection.
The Bible and Mrs. Eddy are conveying ideas to an entire world’s diverse views of God. And whatever an individual’s present view, each deserves a bridge that will provide access to the revelation of Truth contained in these books.
