Freedom found from state despotism

From the August 2014 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Originally written in German, this testimony first appeared in the April 2014 German, French, Portuguese, and Spanish editions of The Herald of Christian Science.

When I read daily accounts in the media of the unrest and oppression in countries such as Syria and Egypt, I think about how I, as an individual, can contribute to peace in the world. In the Bible we read: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (II Corinthians 3:17, New Revised Standard Version).

In the 1970s, I met a Romanian family at the Black Sea while I was vacationing there. They talked to me in French and told me that they were very unhappy under the Communist regime of dictator Ceausescu. Their possessions had been taken away, and they were not allowed to study at a university because they were members of the upper class. Their freedoms had been taken away, and they lived in very primitive conditions. In their despair, they asked me if I could help them. I said, “Yes, but only through prayer.”

They accepted my offer to pray for them. I talked to them daily about the fact that God had created them free, and that no human being could take this freedom away from them. I told them about Christian Science, and they were very receptive. When I left, they asked me to come back as soon as possible and to bring some Christian Science literature with me.
