Why go to church?

From the January 2015 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I found myself asking myself that question one day, and my answer was: to get and to give.

What do I want to get? Answer: Inspiration; a better understanding of God; healing.

I don’t think it’s selfish—in fact, it’s completely normal—to want to find healing at church services. Healing through divine power glorifies God. The healing might be of something that I’ve been praying about for a while. Or maybe of something I didn’t even know needed healing—a hidden fear or just a general sense of worry. Or maybe of a tendency to be judgmental or to be oversensitive. In any case, I can go to church and expect the inspiration that will enable me to walk out free.
