God’s laws bring healing

From the February 2015 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I lived in a small village years ago in Mexico, and before I knew about Christian Science, I contracted some sort of disease that manifested itself in open sores, first on one foot, then the other. The sores grew in scope and infected both legs. The situation was painful, and it was hard for me to walk around freely. Dear people would come with various home remedies, but nothing alleviated the problem.

I would normally have consulted a doctor, but the nearest one was two hours away by bus, and there was no telephone. I remember sitting in my bed in the dark one night (electricity was turned off in the evening) and feeling very alone. I didn’t know what to do, but I loved the Bible and remembered many stories about Jesus and verses from the book of Psalms.

Fortunately, I had a small Bible with me and memorized familiar verses, such as: “The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble” (Psalms 9:9), and also, “It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places” (Psalms 18:32, 33). As I thought of these verses, they not only gave me confidence that my feet were again going to be able to climb the dusty hills around the village, they brought me great comfort.
