Metrics: What are we measuring?

From the April 2015 issue of The Christian Science Journal

You may be surprised how much metrics, a method of measurement, is a part of daily life. It’s used to measure the progress of companies, the activities of employees, and even to assess your habits at the local grocery store and online.

As the use of metrics becomes more pervasive, it’s important to be sure we are not defining the present status and future of our churches by metrics, by mortal measurement. Why? Because metrics cannot properly assess or provide a full report regarding the demonstration of the spirit of Christ.

An experience of a friend of mine illustrated this point to me. My friend called to tell me what had happened at the Wednesday testimony meeting of her local branch Church of Christ, Scientist. The first thing she mentioned was how few people there were at the service but then, quickly dropping that measurement, went on to tell me of the inspiring testimonies of healing that were shared by those who had attended. Her love for each person who stood up and told of their healing was evident in her voice and the tender way she spoke. The encouragement she gained from their healings brought about by Christian Science was palpable. Her gratitude was immeasurable for the participants’ substantial contributions.
