An ‘excellent spirit’ is in you

From the May 2015 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It had been a rough couple of months in my business. Everything was at a standstill. I was becoming discouraged. It was a Wednesday night, and I decided to go to the testimony meeting at the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, of which I am a member.

The meeting began with the First Reader reading selections from the Bible and from Mary Baker Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. They included the story of Daniel and the lions’ den. What I grasped that night was that Daniel understood his relation to God. He prayed three times a day, and he lived his prayers. The Bible states that “an excellent spirit was in him” (Daniel 6:3). This spiritual insight has helped me in every work situation I have had since then.

Prayer can help us realize that “an excellent spirit” is in each of us also. Man is spiritual, the creation of Spirit, and expresses all the qualities of God. So we can say that the “excellent spirit” to which the Bible refers includes wisdom, joy, peace, patience, tenderness, and love.
