Prayer overcomes chronic pain

From the May 2015 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Almost 18 years ago, I was a busy young wife and mother and worked full time in the advertising industry. I led an active, fast-paced life and enjoyed it. However, I started to feel ill on a regular basis. My limbs would become painful, and I began to have regular headaches that would at times make me feel I was about to pass out. These symptoms frightened me.

In my daily study of the Christian Science Bible Lesson, I looked for passages on how God loves and cares for man and does not create sickness. After a few months it was clear that I needed to pray more specifically to heal the sickness, as the symptoms became more aggressive. For a while I was able to continue working and not have others notice any difficulty, but I was more often unwell than well. I seemed to be in constant physical discomfort.

Even as I continued to pray, I considered getting my condition diagnosed. Since I had been raised in Christian Science, this was a foreign thought to me, but I felt desperate to know what was happening. However, with my husband’s encouragement and support, I felt confident that I could work this problem out in Christian Science. I knew that God is always the most effective healer.
