‘As in heaven, so on earth’

From the June 2015 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many readers will recognize this title as a portion of Mary Baker Eddy’s spiritual interpretation of the line in the Lord’s Prayer given by Christ Jesus to his followers: “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Her interpretation reads in full: “Enable us to know,—as in heaven, so on earth,—God is omnipotent, supreme” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 17).

Writing further of this human and divine coincidence, she declares: “John saw the human and divine coincidence, shown in the man Jesus, as divinity embracing humanity in Life and its demonstration,—reducing to human perception and understanding the Life which is God” (Science and Health, p. 561). This coincidence is not happenstance. It does not occur only rarely or by chance. It is divine Love coming to human thought and embracing us and our loved ones. It is inevitable, and is the essence of healing as understood in Christian Science.

Christ Jesus did God’s will. He understood this inevitable coinciding of human experience with the divinely real. He understood, as we all must, that disease and discord of every kind are a false sense of things—a kind of mental darkness in need of light. Thus, healing in Christian Science—though it does bring about the needed physical cure—isn’t actually making sick matter well, or troubled circumstances better. It is simply revealing to consciousness the good that alone is real.
