Proving Principle

From the August 2016 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes it may seem that what we want most in life is healing. Perhaps we’ve struggled with a long-term illness or condition. Or, there’s a relationship problem that is troubling and needs correcting. Or, we’d simply like to be able to be freer and happier. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with these desires!

And yet I’ve learned, through a deeper study of Christian Science, that seeking God first, gaining a clearer sense of my relationship to Him, is paramount. This approach is spiritually rewarding. In doing this, seeking to understand God better, both the healing and a strengthened spiritual sense of my relationship to God are naturally realized.

Looking to the Bible, we find Christ Jesus’ instruction to “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). And the Discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, explains when she writes about Christ Jesus: “His purpose in healing was not alone to restore health, but to demonstrate his divine Principle. He was inspired by God, by Truth and Love, in all that he said and did” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 51).
