Lump dissolved through prayer

From the September 2016 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Priceless lessons from the Scriptures, particularly the healing ministry of Christ Jesus, have become increasingly clear to me through the study of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. One that has been most helpful to me recently is the absolute trust in God’s ability to heal that Jesus consistently expressed. However aggressive the situations he faced, his work showed that an understanding of God’s power can remove fear or doubt and bring healing.

Jesus’ teachings and example are so meaningful to me that when I discovered a lump in my breast, my immediate response was a quiet feeling of calm trust. Science and Health confirms the value of calm trust in spiritual healing. It states, “Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not” (p. 495).

At that time, though, I did begin to ask myself whether I could be so sure that trusting God was not just blind faith or even fervent hope. I had seen many healings through prayer based in spiritual fact as taught in the Scriptures and in Science and Health, and those experiences were of great help in supporting my confidence in God’s ability to heal. But it is the truths underlying such healings that are the real basis for calm trust. My confidence began to be restored when I remembered that Christ Jesus revealed God as eternal Life, and showed that God’s nature is law to His likeness. Through patient prayer I understood more clearly that God, Life, being supreme, is trustworthy. My life is in infinite, eternal Life itself.
