Who had I become? That’s the question I was faced with when my parents came to visit me at boarding school in the fall of my freshman year.
I’d become someone my parents had trouble identifying with.
Up until that point, my parents and I had always been close. I’d been homeschooled through middle school and enjoyed a very solid, warm relationship with both my mom and dad. Then, freshman year, I went away to boarding school, where I started dealing with issues I hadn’t been exposed to back at home. These issues included drama with other girls, romantic relationships, and other issues that required a strong moral compass. In spite of what I’d learned from attending the Christian Science Sunday School all my life, I didn’t resolve these issues by turning to prayer or my understanding of God. Instead, I sought help from friends, who weren’t always making the best decisions themselves.
