Facing down limitation

From The Christian Science Journal - April 25, 2011

We’ve all probably heard of the concept of original sin, which is from the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible.

In the book of Genesis, the world is described as a perfect paradise, up until the first sin was committed, when Adam and Eve disobeyed the Lord and ate the forbidden apple. But was it? Was Eden really so heavenly before any apples were eaten?

I was forced to ask this question one day as I was reading through the Glossary of Science and Health. When I read part of the spiritual description of the river Euphrates, it stopped me in my tracks: “The atmosphere of human belief before it accepts sin, sickness, or death; a state of mortal thought, the only error of which is limitation; finity; the opposite of infinity” (p. 585). I was stunned! There was an error in mortal thought more original than original sin?
