The first great Commandment

From The Christian Science Journal - December 24, 2012

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37). This is the first great commandment, we’re told. A deeper study of what this command means and how we might actually obey it benefits us in unfathomable ways and opens the way for healing.

Obeying it more deeply became a requirement for me at a time when funds seemed dangerously low. In fact, I had just $25 in my bank account and a small daughter to support. I’d been working as a freelance writer and editor in order to stay at home and work around my young daughter’s schedule before she was old enough to attend school. But suddenly the work dried up. I was getting desperate.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, makes this observation about being obedient: “We shall obey and adore in proportion as we apprehend the divine nature and love Him understandingly, warring no more over the corporeality, but rejoicing in the affluence of our God. Religion will then be of the heart and not of the head” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 140).
