I think it is fair to say that we all want peace, calm, and comfort in our lives. I’ve come to realize that it’s something I greatly desire, and it is promised by Jesus: “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever” (John 14:16).
Wow. That’s a beautiful promise, and I sure don’t want to miss out on this gift. What did he mean by this “Comforter”? Different Bible translations call it different names such as helper … the advocate … counselor.
Regardless of the name, Jesus is promising something holy that will abide with us forever—and is always working on our behalf. Mary Baker Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures tells us: “… if sickness and sin are illusions, the awakening from this mortal dream, or illusion, will bring us into health, holiness, and immortality. This awakening is the forever coming of Christ, the advanced appearing of Truth, which casts out error and heals the sick” (p. 230). This means to me that “the forever coming of the Christ” allows us to yield to the Comforter in times of need. It brings along with it the most beautiful signature card of calm.
